Tamarack reef is a common starting place for many because of its forgiving and consistent way of breaking. The long stretches of beach in front local state park are also perfect for a newer surfer to find their own space.
For the intermediate to advanced surfer, all it takes is a walk down the seawall in the northern part of Carlsbad to find a good sandbar. This area is unique because it will pick up swell from multiple directions.
