Learning to Surf
Learning to surf is difficult enough, watch how these brave visually impaired surfers learned new surfing tricks at Carlsbad Beaches.
Visually Impaired Take To The Waves
With warm waves gently splashing over their wet suits, these brave visually impaired surfers received their first surf lessons, thanks to a group of knowledgeable volunteers.
Blind Surfers at Carlsbad Beach
The day was just perfect ... warm waters, gentle waves, not too breezy ... and the waves were just perfect! Too bad these surfers could not see the beauty of the day. The smiles on their faces were contagious.
Assisted by a ratio of 10 to 1, these brave visually impaired surfers had the time of their lives thanks to some very special Lions Club volunteers.
Volunteers arrived early to clean this area of Carlsbad Beach of any loose seaweed that might hinder the surfers. Everyone worked together as a team to insure the safety and pleasure for the handful of surfers that turned out for this annual event.

The video above shows how the volunteers helped each of the participants get out into the waves safely, and mount the soft foam boards.

Can you see the wonder in this surfer's face? Imagine how liberating she must feel learning to surf!
The Lion's Club volunteer I spoke with told me that this annual event is a big hit each year. They plan a ratio of 10 volunteers who are knowledgeable surfers to each of the blind surfers.

Their were hugs all around as each participant took to the waves and successfully rode in wave after wave. Who knows ... maybe next year when they return they will learn more surfing tricks!
