Then came the Spa, and then another 2,000 acres were bought and the Inn was expanded. In 1972, La Costa got incorporated into Carlsbad. The Japanese company Sports Shinko purchased the La Costa Spa and Resort in 1987 for what was then a record-setting price of $250 million. They sold it in 2001 to California resort hotel group KSL for $120 million.
